PRE-WAXING TIPS FROM STUDIO BRANCA OF ST. LOUIS

Every woman wants smooth, touchably soft skin, but the high maintenance that comes with daily shaving can be a pain. Literally. That’s why waxing is a great option for hair removal. With the right ingredients and methods, waxing can be practically painless and even beneficial. Waxing lasts longer than other hair removal methods and can weaken hair follicles, slowing hair growth and causing the hair to grow back thinner and often lighter. And since waxing exfoliates the skin, it leaves skin feeling soft and silky smooth. The skilled estheticians at the Studio Branca and Salon Branca, premier hair salons and spas in St. Louis, use natural and plant-based waxes for soothing yet highly effective results. Before you book your waxing appointment though, here are some things you should know to help make your first waxing session a success:

Let Your Hair Grow Out

For the best waxing results, don’t shave or trim the hair you want waxed right before your appointment. Hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grab on to, which ideally is at least ¼-inch in length. Short hair is denser and harder to pull out, so in order to catch every hair, avoid shaving or trimming three to four weeks before your wax.

Some Prep Work Required

It’s a good idea to exfoliate the area you are going to wax the night before or morning of your appointment. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells for a cleaner wax and can help prevent ingrown hairs. If your skin is sensitive, avoid caffeine a few hours before your wax and take an ibuprofen or pain reliever an hour before to reduce inflammation and sensitivity. For first time waxers, it’s also best to avoid waxing one week before or after your period, since that is the time that your body is the most sensitive.

High Possibility of Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are often the result of hair removal when hair breaks above or below the skin’s surface instead of being removed completely from the hair follicle. The blunt end of the break often causes the hair to grow improperly, resulting in painful red bumps. To help avoid this, exfoliate the day before and the day after your wax to remove the dead skin cells from the follicles. There are also exfoliating products like wipes and moisturizers that can help prevent ingrown hairs before they appear. Also opt for wearing loose, breathable clothing after the wax, as tight clothes can irritate and chafe the skin, causing ingrown hairs.

Results Have a Transition Period

What most first-time waxers may not know is that there is a short transition period between your first wax and the optimal results most people tend to expect with waxing. If you are used to shaving and are not aware of your hair’s growth cycle, it may take two to three consistent waxing sessions before your hair will start growing back slower and less dense. Although hair may start growing back a few days after your first wax, once you figure out your hair’s growth cycle and keep up with your waxing, you may be able to enjoy up to three or four weeks of hairless, soft skin. Just remember not to shave or trim between waxes, as that will blunt the ends of the hair and irritate the follicles.

If you keep all of these tips in mind for your next wax, you’ll be strutting through downtown St. Louis or sitting pretty by the pool at the Four Seasons with incredibly soft, hairless skin.
